So this Hungarian immigrant shows up at our door one day with wares to sell. We walk out to his truck and trailer where he has some of the most interesting pottery and rustic bowls we've seen. His handmade pottery is from his native Hungary... specifically Seibenburgen, which means Seven Forts. All are uniquely painted and finished by hand.
The bowls we purchased are all hand carved and scraped out of Sycamore or wormwood. They are 50 to 60 years old and are referred to as 'dough bowls'. Families use them to knead dough for bread. In smaller farming communities, the larger dough bowls are what families use to take larger amounts of bread or food to festivals, where they are placed on banquet tables for family style dining. Several of our bowls actually have family initials carved on them to mark them, as well as some older more used ones that have been repaired with wire, or even a brass plate. They have a wonderful patina and you can see the years of use. Each has its unique style, sizing and feel to it.
We also purchased from the peddler Hungarian soldier boxes that range in size and color. They too are over 60 years old. All have unique characteristics with markings of family initialsand forged hardware unique to each. These beautiful pieces would give any room a feeling of a 'one of a kind.' And indeed each is of a kind. No catalogs, no pictures, just the real thing and you have to see them to appreciate them. When you purchase a piece from our new Hungarian Antiquities collection, you will have something special and your own.
