MARY MADDEN, ASID
“I always enjoyed color and texture and beautiful things. I never considered doing anything other than interior design,” says Mary Madden. Growing up in a family business, she began working at Madden-McFarland as a young child, learning the business from the floor up. After graduating from the University of North Texas with a B.F.A. in interior design and a minor in architectural studies, she joined the company full-time. Mary possesses an energetic presence, a practical nature and a solid foundation in design principles.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
The goal of interior design should always be to create a living space that works for the client. At its best, interior design achieves both function and beauty, never sacrificing one for the other. I approach projects from a pragmatist’s point of view. The bottom line is that my work must say more about my client than about me. What I love about the profession is getting to know clients––finding out where they are in their lives, what they want from their living or working environment––and then creating design solutions that will enhance their space and enrich their lives. I look at the practical implications of whatever stage of life an individual is in. It is important to understand that a young child may spill on the sofa or need a fun place to store toys. By accounting for everyday realities, I can help simplify a parent’s job and enhance a child’s appreciation for the beauty and comfort of home. Whether a residential or commercial project, I always try to lead the client into the future by introducing new ideas. Design that expands the comfort zone maintains the client's satisfaction longer, and in so doing, adds value beyond dollars and cents savings over time.
