That is the premise behind the MaddMac Challenge. “We think it is the easiest, most affordable and fun way for a homeowner to give a tired room new energy and life,” says Patrick Madden.

Kim Wolf agrees. She had a room with an identity crisis. “It’s a beautiful room but we simply tired of it and didn’t use it,” says Wolf. She consulted with Madden who suggested a MaddMac Challenge to retool rather than completely redo the room. New paint on the walls, two striking buffet lamps Wolf spied in the showroom and just one hour with two design experts rearranging furniture, artwork and accessories in the room and Voila! The room was transformed. “Just a couple of new pieces and a new room design helped make a room my family had lived with day-in and day-out completely different and refreshed,” says Wolf.

Conner showcased the home’s stunning architecture by choosing materials and finishes as well as furniture and art in monochromatic color schemes to emphasize bold architectural scale and detail. The home abounds with examples of extraordinary features that inspire curious wonder –– starting with the grand hallway. Smooth stone slab Romanesque archways are juxtaposed against cut stone, cross-cut travertine marble flooring, and custom designed iron and handblown glass wall sconces. Polished glass infused into the stone showcases an amazing wine cellar.

An original design Italian stone mosaic kitchen backsplash with flowing vine motif serves as allegory for the project’s artistic evolution. The contemporary natural wood ceiling with craggy angles and pitches is the star of the dining room as limestone Venetian plaster walls, generous windows filled with seasonal splendor, white marble floor and European renaissance style furniture handcrafted of reclaimed antique wood play supporting roles.

The eclectic edges of Dr. Silverstein’s unique and inventive personality are reflected in the master suite where contemporary design and art meets classic antique furniture, and where cherished family heirlooms along with artwork of a pre-teen family friend celebrate enduring valued human relationship.

The new energy came significantly from custom-designed and crafted parasol lighting fixtures that injected bold drama and color. Modernity was further emphasized through the custom-colored spyro pattern carpet (one of the first installations of the design in the country). Perhaps one of the most unique elements is the bouquet of jeweled metal roses adorning the wall in the bar area. “The design was a tribute to EBT’s long-time president, Ed Holland, who is a passionate rose gardener known for presenting women patrons with a martini rose. Rose designs are also incorporated in lighting fixtures. She respected the original vision of EBT – to preserve the Emery, Bird, Thayer legacy of quality and service for future generations of Kansas Citians – by creating more emphasis on the artifacts and architectural details that still exist from the original store, including the original sandstone column capitals, wrought iron fixtures, framed stained glass and brass elevator cages. She added to the life of the story by including vintage photos and a series of Emery, Bird, Thayer advertisements that ran in The Independent magazine in the 1930s and 1940s.
