CONNIE CHURCH-FEY, Allied Member ASID
Growing up in rural Missouri, Connie Church-Fey never considered an interior design career. Her high school interests were in cross-country running and in music, where she showed promise. "I went away to St. Paul's College as a music major," says Connie. "Piano and organ performance did not turn out to be my passion, so I quit school." Connie eventually enrolled at Central Missouri State University where she hit her stride as an interior design major. After graduating with a B.F.A. and completing an internship, she joined the design team at Madden-McFarland Interiors. Her distinguished career includes positions with local interior design firms specializing in residential interiors, a condo developer at Lake of the Ozarks, an architectural firm specializing in commercial design, a national restaurant chain and a national grocery co-op. She has operated her own interior design firm. Her signature work includes developing the neighborhood theme for Applebee's International and an award-winning grocery boutique concept, Brookside Market. In August, 2005, she returned home to Madden-McFarland.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Commercial design is my first love. It affords tremendous creative opportunity. The challenge in interior design is to create an environment in which the client feels good about being there. That challenge is magnified in commercial settings in which "client" incorporates not only those who work in the space, but customers who come there to shop or dine or conduct business. It is especially rewarding to revisit a restaurant or store that I have designed and see people who want to be there and are responding to what the client is offering.
